Woodpecker Hole Repair for Stucco Walls
Gila woodpeckers drill Phoenix stucco like it's a saguaro. We patch the holes properly and fix the hollow spot that attracted the bird.
The problem
Gila woodpeckers nest in saguaros. To a bird, a hollow stucco wall on a foam-backed home sounds exactly like one, so it drills a neat round hole and moves in.
One hole becomes several. Word gets around. The nest fills with debris, water follows it in, and by monsoon season you have a wet wall with birds in it.
We patch the holes back through the lath and, where the wall is hollow behind the coat, we deal with that too. A patched hole in a wall that still sounds like a drum just gets drilled again three feet over.

How we handle woodpecker damage

Check the hole is empty
Nesting birds are protected. We check for an active nest before anything gets sealed, and if there is one we schedule the repair for after the season.

Clear the cavity
A nesting hole fills with nest material and debris that holds water against your sheathing. It all comes out before the patch goes on.

Paper, wire, and base coat
Same rebuild as any hole patch. Weather barrier lapped in, mesh tied to the existing lath, base coat filled to just under the surface.

Kill the hollow sound
Where a foam-backed wall drums, we fill behind the patch so the spot reads solid. A solid wall is far less interesting to the next bird.

Texture and color
Finish coat matched to your wall so a row of repairs does not turn into a row of pale circles across the elevation.
Why Phoenix homes get hit and why patching alone fails
The Valley has a lot of Gila woodpeckers. It also has a lot of foam-backed walls. That pairing is why this is a Phoenix problem and barely a problem elsewhere.
The bird is listening, not looking. It taps, hears the hollow gap behind the finish coat, and reads that as a cavity worth opening. Patch the hole and leave the hollow, and the same wall gets drilled again a foot away.
That's the part most patch jobs skip. We fill behind the repair so the drum sound goes away, which is the only part of this that actually discourages the next bird.
